Breast Cancer is a kind of tumor (many cancer cells altogether) that arises from breast cells. Usually, breast cancer develops in women but it has a probability of affecting men too, even though it happens rarely.   • Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS):- It is the most popular kind of non-invasive breast cancer. As this cancer is an early stage of Breast Cancer, it has the major probability of being cured.
  • Inflammatory breast cancer: – This breast cancer converts the breast skin into red and feels warm making it seem like an infection. These changes occur due to the obstruction of lymph vessels by the cancer cells.
  • Triple-negative breast cancers: – This is one subtype of invasive breast cancer with cells that have low estrogen levels and progesterone receptor on their surface. It tends to develop more in African-American and young women.
  • Lobular carcinoma in situ: – Even though it is not cancer and just an area of abnormal cell growth in the breast, this might add up to the chances of developing invasive breast cancer in later stages of life.

Risk Factors of Breast Cancer

  • Women who get their menarche( beginning of menstrual cycle) before the age of 12 and women who continue having their menstrual periods even after the age of 55 tend to have slightly more risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Having the first child after the age of 30 or having no children at all also increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Breastfeeding for a year or more might slightly decrease the chances of having breast cancer.
  • Obesity
  • Continuous intake of oral contraceptives might also increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Whereas  breast cancer can moreover be symptom-free, some usually observed symptoms are –

  • Inverted nipple
  • Lump(s) in the armpit or breast.
  • Nipple discharge, usual blood
  • Pain in the breast or sore nipple
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the armpit or neck
  • Change in size or color of nipple or breast

Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

  • Ultrasound
  • Biopsy

Treatment of Breast Cancer

  1. Mastectomy – The surgery in which the whole breast is removed.
  2. Lumpectomy- The surgery in which only the tissue affected by the cancer is removed. It is also called Breast-Conserving Surgery.
  3. Radiation therapy – In this high-energy wave is used to kill the cancer cells.
  4. Chemotherapy – In this drugs are injected directly into veins to kill the cancer cells. As these medicines are very powerful, they have some side effects as well such as nausea, hair loss, early menopause, hot flashes, etc.
